Two positions currently available

YOUTH SERVICES ASSISTANT – Gaffney Library

Part-time, 25-hour average per week, FLSA non-exempt position

Mon., Tues., Thurs.                  3 pm – 7 pm
Wednesday                                 10 am – 6 pm
Friday                                           9 am – 3 pm

(Alternate one Saturday per month)

Overview:

Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, the Youth Services Assistant aides in the preparation and implementation of youth programming as well as providing assistance to patrons, especially in regards to children and teen collections.

Applicants who do not meet the availability and minimum education and experience requirements indicated in this job posting or do not have the ability to perform the essential functions for the position, with or without accommodation, will not be considered for employment.

Starting wage is $8.00 per hour. Works under direct supervision of the Youth Services Manager.  Must be at least 16 years and up to apply.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma preferred
  • Proficient computer skills, especially with Internet and Microsoft Office applications; experience with iMacs preferred
  • Customer service oriented
  • Ability to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently; ability to perform other physical tasks frequently, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs circulation tasks: checks books in and out, collects fines, places books on hold, registers patrons for library cards;
  • Re-shelves and straightens books and other library materials;
  • Instructs patrons on library resources and use of library equipment; assists patrons in finding library materials; performs reader advisory service;
  • Assists patrons with reference questions; helps patrons locate reference materials; responds to patron inquiries and questions over the telephone and in person;
  • Assists patrons using public PC’s for Internet access and/or using Microsoft Office applications; monitors usage of public PC’s by patrons, including enforcement of library policies;
  • Assists and instructs children and teens in the use of the Learning Resource Center;
  • Assists with the preparation and implementation of children and teen programs;
  • Assists in the final processing and organization of children’s materials;
  • Creates visual displays throughout children’s area as directed;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Heritage Room Manager – Gaffney Library

Full-time, FLSA exempt position

Schedule: Monday – Friday: 8:45 AM – 5:15 PM; Alternates Friday and Saturday every fourth week

Overview:

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Heritage Room Manager oversees the local history area of the library and provides assistance to patrons performing genealogical and historical research, particularly in regards to local history.

Starting wage is $19,250 per year. Works under direct supervision of the Library Director.

Education and Experience:

 -Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university is preferred

-Bachelor’s degree required; study of history preferred

-Research skills and ability to use online database

-Customer service oriented

-Computer skills and experience, including excellent skills in Internet and Microsoft Office, and ability to acquire and use new technology skills

-Ability to supervise and to establish and maintain working relationships with library staff and the general public

-Ability to recognize and correct errors

-Must possess a valid SC driver’s license

-Must be able to perform the duties of the job, including lifting up to 40 pounds, and must have the ability to reach, stoop, and bend without difficulty.

-Other combinations of experience and training, which meet the minimum requirements, may be substituted.

Duties and Responsibilities:

– Performs general public service functions at the South Carolina Room desk with emphasis on local history

– Responds to reference queries received by phone, email and mail

-Assists patrons with genealogical research

-Maintains understanding of relevant online database use, particularly Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest

-Participates in development, maintenance, and organization of local history material

-Assists in other duties throughout the library, including working regularly scheduled hours at the circulation desk when not in heritage room
