Youth Service Assistant – (Full-Time) Blacksburg/Gaffney

Overview: Under the direction of the Blacksburg Branch Manager, the Youth Service Assistant provides front-line service to library patrons, assisting with circulation and re-shelving of library materials, creation of library cards, and basic computer assistance. In addition to the circulation duties, this position plans and implements programming and events for youth ages 0-18. Also, this position will be required to work at both Cherokee County Library locations each week, but a primary focus will be on the Blacksburg location.

Essential Functions:

-Performs circulation tasks: checks books in and out, collects fines, places books on hold, registers patrons for library cards, and assist patrons with copying/faxing requests.

-Re-shelves and straightens books and other library materials

-Instructs patrons on library resources and use of library equipment; assists patrons in finding library materials; performs reader advisory service

-Assists patrons with reference questions; helps patrons locate reference materials; responds to patron inquiries and questions over the telephone and in person

-Assists patrons using public PC’s for Internet access and/or using Microsoft Office applications; monitors usage of public PC’s by patrons, including enforcement of library policies

-Oversees the circulation desk in the absence of the Branch Manager.

-Assist in overseeing the library building and staff, at least, one Saturday a month.

-Prepares and implements programs for children and teens, including summer reading programs and storytimes at the Blacksburg Branch Library. All programing will be approved by the Branch Manager and guidance will be given by the Youth Services Manager.

-Assist Youth Services staff with programs and department duties at the Gaffney Library location on days scheduled at the Gaffney Library.

-Provides recommendations for new book purchases in the children and teen collections

-Creates visual displays throughout children’s area as directed

-Works within annual Youth Services budget

-Performs related tasks as required.

Position works 37.5 hours per week

Annual salary: approximately $28,000 – $29,250 w/State Benefits

Education and Experience:

-High School diploma or equivalent required.

-Proficient computer skills, especially with Internet and Microsoft Office applications

-Customer service oriented

-Ability to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently; ability to perform other physical tasks frequently, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions

-Knowledge of community interest for Youth ages 0-18

-Other combinations of experience and training, which meet the minimum requirements, may be substituted.

Circulation Assistant (Part-time/25hrs weekly)

-Required to work, at least, one to two Saturdays a month. -Performs related tasks as required.

Schedule: Mon-Thursday 2pm-7pm; Fridays 12pm-5pm; Saturdays 10am-3pm (at least, once a month).

Salary: $10 per hour. Up to 20-25 hours per week.

Education and Experience:

-High School diploma or equivalent required

– Proficient computer skills, including Internet and Microsoft Office applications

– Customer service experience desired, library experience helpful

-Work requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions
